I have read a lot of books and many a books about addiction ... This one by far was my favorite. At first I couldn't understand why it was so long but than I get to the last page and am upset because I wanted it to continue on. I am a recovering heroin addict and a recovering alcoholic with short of 4 years clean. This girl was me, in a million ways but also not in another million ways. Either way our story was the same and filled with so much heartache and a deep despair even drugs couldn't fix. This book was so cleverly put together that I forgot I was reading a story ... It was powerful. Thankyou! And please don't stop making books like these ... It may save someone's life! Great book definitely recommend it!

I am in recovery but still struggle daily to stay sober. I have been having a hard time concentrating on reading a book. I finished this book in 3 days. This is the 1st book in several years that I have been able to read all the way through. With that being said... I absolutely loved this book. I could relate on so many levels. I am 49 years old and my entire family are alcoholic/addicts. I started drinking heavily at the age of 13. I would recommend this book for anyone that has had similar experiences!

It's hard to say how much you enjoyed a book about a 7 year old growing into addiction, but this book is impressive. As a reader, you are immediately drawn into the character's family life and her immediate world that she attempts to navigate alone from a young age. You walk with her as she makes good decisions, bad decisions and every choice in between. It is a raw and emotionally powerful story about failing a child. But it is also a tremendous book about the resilience of the human spirit. Highly recommend!

I read books when I brush and floss my teeth at night and sometimes over my tea in the morning. I got on a cross-country plane with "How To Grow An Addict" and six hours later I was wishing the ride was a little longer so I could get to the end that I was rapidly approaching. As soon as I got to my destination I barred the door, sat down and finished. I felt elated, shaken and awakened by this story. J.A. Wright speaks to my heart with her frank, in-depth and vivid writing shot through with razor emotions. This book made me laugh many times out loud but always broke my insides open with tears. It's a panoramic emotional experience and I love her style. The eye of the author zooms into extremely intimate, private moments with her protagonist examining her from the guts to the bones to her outsides. Then she pans back to take in a wrecked landscape of broken families and relationships, frightening choices and a descent to rock bottom. It's journey into darkness rewarded by the discovery of a kind of light found only in absolute darkness. My deepest thanks to J.A. Wright who clearly has poured her honed craft into this exquisite story.

It's a good read all around, and if you have anyone in your life with substance abuse issues it helps put a few things into perspective. This is one of those books that has built such a strong lead character, you KNOW her. I felt myself living her experiences, wanting to help her make decisions, feeling the consequences with her. This book comes to life in your mind, and that, is a well written book. It is the last book I've read in a long time, that I couldn't put down. This is the kind of book, where you don't feel like the author was trying to hard- and that's wonderful. Did you ever read something where you find yourself skimming over paragraphs, turning a page- just to get back to the story? J.A. Wright apparently is not that kind of writer. I read every word, because every word was the story. I am glad I have it on my kindle to read again.

Really good book about the childhood of a nice little girl ruined by adults. I believe the tendencies of an addict are always inside a person, but it takes something on the outside to trigger their inner demons. This child had plenty of the wrong people to mold her. I wanted to take Randall away from her parents and brother. Both of my dear friends children became addicts and no one knows why. Or how? How does this happen in a happy looking, loving family? Well, it's because we never know what really goes on behind closed doors, or what children live with that sets their choices for them. I'm suggesting this book to our Library Book Club. Well written, pulled me right in and I had it done in 3 days. How could anyone put this down? - Beth Firce, McCormick County Library

I devoured this book in a weekend. I took it around with me everywhere I went. Stayed up late Sunday night to finish it before work. It was fantastic. Well written and relatable. Several times I wanted to reach into the pages and tell Randall that IT WILL get better. Loved it, (from the standpoint of a person who was lived with a user/alcoholic) and hope to see more.

I absolutely loved this book. It was the kind of book that’s hard to put down. The author is very relatable, she is telling a lot about her situation that was honest and sometimes alarming .If you’re thinking you drink too much or struggling with another addiction , and it’s maybe a problem, you’re really going to want to read this
